Happy 60th, Days of Our Lives!

Like sands through the hourglass
So are the days of our lives

It feels right that this inaugural post on my blog is about Days of Our Lives since we just celebrated the 60th anniversary of the many triumphs and travails of a little town called Salem. I have loved the venerable soap opera ever since I was in high school, sneaking clandestine peeks at episodes with my fellow classmates on the big clunky TV set whenever our lackadaisical teacher wandered off for a coffee break (or to do God only knows what). Even during the times when I've lapsed in my viewing for whatever reason, something always brings me back to Salem because it's home. I can't imagine my days without Days.

This legacy soap is best known for its larger-than-life plotlines (Marlena possessed twice, anyone?), iconic characters (Bo Brady, where you at?), and beloved supercouples (Steve & Kayla and Jack & Jen get my votes). Days has built up a large and loyal fanbase over the years. The dedication and love fans have for our show and the actors is unparalleled in fandom. We are ride or die for this show, through the ups and the downs and in between. It's great to see, especially considering how much the soap opera has changed over the years, like the big leap from network TV to streaming on Peacock.

There have been a lot of great celebrations for the anniversary this weekend, but it would be erroneous of me not to give a shout-out to the special fan tribute that was put together by two awesome Days fans named Keri and Ndamba. They even created special music for the occasion. Their hard work deserves appreciation.

I have posted the video of the fan tribute below. It's over an hour long; full of wonderful anecdotes, classic flashbacks, and actors past and present talking about what the show means to them.

As for what the show means to me? You can only imagine. I have gone through some tough times over the past year, and when I needed an escape, Days has been there, like a shining little light in a dark tunnel, beckoning me to come visit for a while with the characters I know almost as well as I know myself. Whether they be demented or sane, sweet or savvy, lovable or annoying (and sometimes that changes from episode to episode), they're like family. The Hortons, Bradys, Blacks, Kiriakses, DiMeras, Carvers, and Hernandezes are like family to me.

Thank you to the fans, the cast, and the crew of Days for providing me with some of the best days of my life.

I am ending this post by sharing a few old photographs of Days stars I met during an event at the Paley Center in L.A., many moons ago. These actors are awesome, right?
